Oct 4, 2008Question:My partner and I have a small, south facing sloping field of about an acre that we'd like to return to it's former use as a traditional orchard.
It's currently very, very overgrown and we plan on putting some pigs in to clear it prior to planting. Any advice on what to plant, variety, size etc and whether there's any grant funding available would be very much appreciated.
It is a registered small-holding of 10 acres in total. We'd like a mixture of apples, pears, cherries, plums etc if possible.

Oct 9, 2008Answer:I also have a totally overgrown, south facing, sloping, partly-walled garden of about 1.5 acres, and plan to restore it as a showcase orchard and nursery of traditional fruits, with the emphasis on cider apples. Maybe we should keep in touch as I am currently researching many of the same questions.
